Feeling the Pull to Change, But Stuck in Place?
Many women in midlife feel an undeniable pull. A restlessness, a craving for something different, something more. Maybe it’s a shift in priorities, a desire to rediscover yourself, or the realization that life is too short to keep waiting.
And yet, despite this pull, something always seems to hold us back. Fear. Uncertainty. The belief that we need to have it all figured out before we take the first step.
I know that feeling well. For a while now, I’ve been questioning a lot. Who I am, what I want, and how I want to shape this next chapter of my life. Like so many women, I found myself at a crossroads, trying to think my way into clarity.
But recently, I took a trip to Guatemala that reminded me of something powerful:
Clarity doesn’t come from sitting still and overthinking. It comes from stepping into action, even when you don’t have all the answers.
Lessons in Action: What My Guatemala Adventure Taught Me
1. Minimalism Isn’t Just About Stuff. It’s About Freedom
Packing for this trip meant fitting everything into a single backpack. No extra outfits ‘just in case,’ no unnecessary baggage. It was freeing. I didn’t have to drag around a heavy suitcase or waste time deciding what to wear. I just lived.
Then I saw the way people in Guatemala live — simply, yet fully. I met families who lived with only the essentials, yet they laughed, connected, and shared their stories with a warmth that I don’t always see in places filled with excess. It was a reminder that the more we accumulate, whether it’s physical stuff, emotional baggage, or limiting beliefs, the heavier we feel.
And here’s the thing: for decades, we’ve been accumulating — careers, responsibilities, expectations, things we thought we needed to be “successful” or “secure.” But what if shedding some of those things was actually the key to feeling lighter, more free, and more aligned with what really matters?
Letting go isn’t about loss. It’s about making space for something better.
2. Grit and Perseverance Are Built, Not Born
Hiking Acatenango was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The steep inclines, the relentless altitude, the exhaustion — it tested me. Every step felt heavier as the air thinned, and at one point, my legs felt like lead. My chest tightened, my breaths grew shallow, and no matter how deeply I inhaled, it felt like I wasn’t getting enough air.
There were moments when I wanted to quit, when I questioned why I even signed up for this in the first place. But step by step, breath by breath, I kept going. I had to focus on just the next step — not the whole climb, not the hours ahead, just the step in front of me.
When I finally reached the top, standing above the clouds with an active volcano erupting in the distance, I felt something I hadn’t in a while: pure, unfiltered accomplishment.
Midlife transitions can feel like an uphill climb too. It’s easy to stay in place because the path forward looks overwhelming. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to see the entire journey to start. You just have to take the next step.
3. Experiences Change You More Than Overthinking Ever Will
In that open-air kitchen, learning to cook Guatemalan dishes with my own hands, I felt the joy of creating something from scratch. When I ground cacao beans and shaped them into chocolate, I understood the beauty of slow, intentional work.
These weren’t things I read about or watched from a distance — I did them. And doing is what made them real.
The same applies to life. You can read all the books, listen to all the advice, and analyze every possible outcome, but nothing shifts until you take action.
- Want to change careers? Try something new.
- Want to find yourself? Put yourself in new situations.
- Thinking alone won’t get you there — living will.
And let’s be honest, taking action is hard. We convince ourselves we’ll start when we feel ready, when we have more confidence, when the timing is better.
But waiting for the perfect moment keeps us stuck. The truth is, you become ready by doing.
Your Invitation to Action
I won’t lie, this trip was out of my comfort zone. It challenged my assumptions, stretched my limits, and made me question what’s truly important. But that’s exactly why it was so transformative.
Midlife transformation isn’t about waiting for clarity to strike — it’s about making a move and letting the clarity come as you go.
So, I want to ask you: Where in your life have you been waiting for clarity, but holding back from action?
What’s one small step you can take today? Whether it’s booking the trip, signing up for the class, having the hard conversation, or simply letting go of something that no longer serves you?
Change isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about saying yes to experiences that shape you along the way.
If you’re ready to start taking action but aren’t sure where to begin or how to craft a plan that actually moves you forward, I’d love to help.
